Thrift Store Fort Polk - "The real mission is to help people." This is what Fort Polk Thrift Book Manager Martina Piazon tries to accomplish with the store. The boutique sells donated second-hand items and donates all proceeds — beyond operating expenses — back to community organizations on Fort Polk and the surrounding communities.

"Our main focus is giving back to the community," said Fort Polk Thrift Book Assistant Manager Annika Archie.
The store is primarily run by volunteers, and maximizes its donations and resources to give back to the community as much as possible.
To receive funds from the store, organizations fill out an application, and the Thrift Boutique board votes to approve it each month. Applicant organizations must be 50 percent military-related, and emphasize education, sports and culture.
"Fort Polk is not in a big city, so to help keep things going, you have to give something -- you have to help," Piazzon said of why the store's community support is important.

The shop also helps with vouchers for job seekers in need of professional clothing who are referred through the Employment Readiness Programme, as well as care packages for those in need in the community.
Piazzon said the store also fulfills the need to offer clothing, household goods and more at reasonable prices for Fort Polk soldiers and their families and the surrounding people.
Anyone can shop at Thrift Boutique. The supplies, however, are only open to soldiers and their families, as well as Department of Defense civilians.
The store also has a five-dollar bag sale on the first Saturday of every month, in which customers can fill a bag with clothes for five dollars. The next one is February 2nd.

"We take things that people don't use anymore, and we turn them into a little treasure for someone else," said Piazzon. "We make people happy."
Archie emphasized the importance of people donating items to the Fort Polk Thrift Book. A donation bin is located in front of the store at 2201 Alabama Ave.
